Russell started her career in racing as an amateur jockey, competing in 20 amateur races, with two wins, between 2006 and 2017. During that period, she worked for numerous top trainers, including Brad Cox, Jonathan Sheppard, Jimmy Jerkens, and Ron Moquett.
In early 2018, Russell launched her own stable. She won with her first starter, Oh My, on February 25, 2018 at Laurel Park. She ended the year with eleven winners from 46 starters.

2020 proved to be a breakout year for Russell. She won 46 races from 159 starters, surpassing $1 million in earnings for the first time. On Oct. 31, 2021, she won her first graded stakes race when Wondrwherecraigis took the Grade 3 Bold Ruler Stakes at Belmont Park.
In 2023, Russell became the first woman to lead the annual trainer standings in Maryland. She ranked 16th nationally in purse earnings ($7,996,867) and 11th in wins. Of Russell’s 177 overall wins, 118 were earned in Maryland. She followed up with another terrific year in 2024, again leading all Maryland trainers by wins with 157 and finishing second in the Big Ass Fans Breders' Cup Dirt Mile with Post Time.
Since 2023, Russell continues to have a major impact on the Mid-Atlantic racing consistently winning at 30 % or higher with horses at all levels of competition whether on the dirt, grass, sprints or routes.
